How to Pack Fragile Items for Moving: A Complete Guide

June 1, 2026

Fragile items cause the most stress during any move. A single cracked plate or scratched screen can sour an otherwise smooth relocation. The good news is that breakage is almost always preventable with the right materials and a methodical approach. This guide walks you through exactly how professional packers protect delicate belongings from the first wrap to the final box.

Gather the Right Packing Materials

Strong protection starts with strong supplies. Skimping on materials is the single biggest reason fragile items get damaged in transit. Before you pack a single glass, make sure you have everything ready.

  • Double-walled corrugated boxes in small and medium sizes
  • Bubble wrap and foam sheets for cushioning
  • Packing paper and tissue for wrapping individual pieces
  • Sturdy packing tape and a tape dispenser
  • Markers for clearly labelling every box

Wrap Each Item Individually

Never place fragile items directly against each other. Wrap each piece separately in packing paper, then add a layer of bubble wrap for anything especially delicate. Fill the hollow space inside cups, vases and glasses with crumpled paper so they keep their shape under pressure.

Plates and Dishes

Stand plates on their edge rather than stacking them flat — they are far more resistant to pressure this way. Wrap each plate, then bundle a few together with extra padding between them.

Glasses and Stemware

Use dedicated cell dividers for stemware where possible. Wrap the stem and bowl separately and never let two glasses touch inside the box.

Load the Box Correctly

Line the bottom of the box with two to three inches of crushed paper or foam. Place heavier items at the bottom and lighter ones on top. Fill every gap so nothing shifts when the box is moved, then add a final cushioning layer before sealing.

  • Cushion the base before adding any items
  • Keep heavier pieces low and lighter pieces high
  • Fill all empty space to stop movement
  • Label the box 'FRAGILE — THIS SIDE UP' on all sides

When to Call the Professionals

Antiques, large mirrors, chandeliers and high-value electronics often need custom crating and specialised handling. Professional packers carry the materials and experience to protect these items properly, and the cost is small compared with the value of what you are moving.
